Two Cabinet Ministers, the Secretaries Of State for Defence, the Rt Hon Sir Michael Fallon MP KCB, and International Development, the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, were guests of Erith & Thamesmead Conservatives at their Annual Dinner held at the Running Horses, Erith riverfront on Thursday 23rd November.

The sold out dinner was attended by Conservative Councillors and supporters from across Bexley including the Leader of Bexley Council Cllr Teresa O’Neill and Bexley Council Cabinet Members Cllr Linda Bailey, Cllr Peter Craske, Cllr Brad Smith, Cllr Alex Sawyer and Cllr Philip Read. The Association also welcomed special student guests from the University of Reading Conservative Society, the President, Kirsty Lewis, their Secretary, Henry Darby, and their Treasurer, Eliot Smith, who is also Chairman of Bexley Conservative Future.

During his speech Sir Michael updated attendees on current political issues, and details on matters relating to his Cabinet post, before being joined by Priti Patel to answer questions.

Topics covered included the Government’s commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defence and 0.7% of GDP on helping some of the poorest people in the world, the increased investment in the Royal Navy, how the Government would be working with the new Presidents of France and the United States when they took office next year and immigration.

The speakers were welcomed to the event by Anna Firth, the Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Erith and Thamesmead Conservative Association and Conservative Candidate in last year’s General Election whilst Cllr John Davey, the Chairman of Erith & Thamesmead Conservatives concluded the evening by moving a vote of thanks to both Sir Michael and Priti Patel.
